From Redbird Nation to Red States

« Another Introduction | Main | Achilles', er, Albert's Heel »

Looks like Bill DeWitt and W are chummier than I thought...

Let's say you need $40 million by next month. Whom do you call?

For President Bush, that answer is Indian Hill's Mercer Reynolds and Bill DeWitt, who are two of the three co-chairmen of the Presidential Inaugural Committee.

Does this mean we're getting another Presidential first pitch this spring? If it means heading back to the Series, then I'm hardly one to complain, but Bill, don't you think it would have been easier to call on Redbird Nation to raise $40 million to resign Edgar Renteria?

Did they really say $40 million?

(checks)

Yes, they did. So *that's* where the Renteria money went.

Actually that 40 million could have done a whole lot better by using it to PROPERLY EQUIP OUR TROOPS.

$40,000,000 could buy 570 fully armored humvees, and you'd still have enough $$$ left to give every soldier a $270 bonus!

But hey, King George needs his coronation to be top o' the line!

I implore that we please do NOT talk politics on this site, as it could get way out of hand (talk to Will Carroll if you doubt it). I'm ticked off enough already that it even came up.

Thanks.

As the poster of this subject, I agree about the need to avoid politics (somehow it's like dividing all Cardinals fans into those that can afford to go to Busch and those that can't), but I must point out that the only reason it is posted is because it has to do with the one of the OWNERS OF THE CARDINALS, Bill DeWitt.

If Matt Morris punched out someone in a bar during the offseason, would you expect me not to post it because it's not baseball related?

Of course not, because it involves one of the Redbirds.

Like it or not, people are interested in the personal lives of celebrities, my job is to report and occasionally make snide comments.

In this case I think I only made one (snide comment, that is), and it wasn't meant to be political - it was simply meant to point out that while one of the owners of the Cardinals is out raising money for the President's inaugural ball, he is poo-pooing the idea of paying the best shortstop in the National League a few more million dollars.

Whether or not you can afford to buy a ticket to Busch, if Mr. DeWitt had called and asked you to help chip in to keep Edgar would you have thought twice?

Sean,

I actually liked, and agreed with, your post -- it was exactly as you described in what you just wrote, and that's fine. What ticked me off was John in Chicago's comment; 570 armored humvees and soldier bonuses have absolutely nothing to do with baseball. (I saw your post before that comment, and didn't feel the need to complain.) Sorry for the misunderstanding.

And for the record, I probably wouldn't have chipped in if Mr. D had called me -- but that has more to do with my lack of funds than my regard for Edgar or the Cardinals.

I think I contributed plenty toward the Renteria Fund last summer when I spent the little money I did have at the ballpark. And I never did quite total in my mind what kind of revenues the Cards got from all the home playoff games they had, but it had to have been a lot. $36-$200+ per seat for 4 games at the NLCS, for 50,000 seats? Yikes.

Yeah. Sorry about that guys. Didn't mean to draw attention to the world around you.

And for MO Boiler, hate to inform you, but "Red States" and "President Bush" have nothing to do with baseball, either.

I think my comments were perfectly appropriate, considering the title; and the contents of the post.

You know, the amount of time, thought, and effort spent on political analysis by editorial columnists, TV pundits, and your Average Joe on the street in the past 35 years were put into the space program, we'd probably have cities on Mars by now.

Whatever. I'm not going to argue any more.

Make that "if the amount of time, thought, and effort".
