Closer Songs
« Linups Again | Main | Izzy Re-ups »Throws like a girl asks what song you would use if you were brought in as a closer.
I love these things, so much fertile ground here:
My first choice would be "Wu Tang Clan Ain't Nuthing to F' Wit".
Can't slip that one by the censors then "Slam" by Onyx.
If I had to pick something done this century I'd say "Cats, Vans, Bags" by Atmosphere.
Your turn...
Posted by Josh at February 25, 2005 01:01 PMI think a wonderful old ragtime number like "Steamboat Stomp" or "Fussy Mabel" or "Georgia Swing" would really fire up the crowd!! Those jaunty chords and lively rythyms get the feet tapping and the hands clapping!! Look out, batter!!
Posted by: salvo at February 25, 2005 01:12 PMThe smurfs theme would be hilarous and a little demeaning to other team.
Posted by: josh at February 25, 2005 02:51 PMthe theme music from "the exorcist," which was titled "tubular bells" --- begone, ye devils, from the basepaths
Posted by: l boros at February 25, 2005 03:41 PMGreen Day's "When I Come Around"
Posted by: czhorse at February 25, 2005 05:22 PM"Knowing me Knowing You" by ABBA
or
"I Will Always Love You" sung by Whitney Houston
Really, though, "Life is Life" by Laibach.
What's Izzy's song right now (if he has one)?
Posted by: Sean at February 25, 2005 05:37 PMIzzy's song is solid closer fare. Free/Zulu by VAST.
Posted by: Dan at February 25, 2005 06:43 PMI always thought "Gratitude" by the Beastie Boys would fire everyone up. My cousin Mark recommends "Dirty Work" by Steely Dan, as in "I'm a fool to do your..." That would win over a lot of friends on the team.
Posted by: Brian Gunn at February 25, 2005 08:18 PMI like the Steely Dan recommendation. That's great. I would have to say "Feels Good to be a Gangster" - that song from the movie "Office Space".
Posted by: Casie at February 25, 2005 09:11 PMThere's a song by The Walkmen called The Rat with some ferocious guitar that opens with these lyrics:
"you've got a nerve to be asking a favor
you've got a nerve to be calling my number
i'm sure
we've been through this before..."
I think it was about love or something, but isn't that how we all feel about closers and they about us?
Posted by: Ryan at February 25, 2005 10:24 PMWhile we're talking about Wu-Tang theme songs, how about "C.R.E.A.M" for Barry Bonds?
With a closer's theme, intimidation is key, that's why "Hell's Bells" works so well. I personally would pick one of the showdown themes from an old spaghetti western. Ennio Morricone "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly" is probably my strongest idea. Another cool one to use would be the theme to "Terminator 2". Here are some other suggestions:
Metallica "Sad But True"
Europe "The Final Countdown"
Rage Against the Machine "Know Your Enemy" or their cover of "How I Could Just Kill a Man"
Posted by: Fitz at February 26, 2005 01:34 PMI've got the perfect song that's so badass with a classic toughguy flair.
"Jailbreak" by Thin Lizzy.
That opening riff is killer, with a great drive to whip the Sea of Red into a frenzy.
Just thinking about it gets me jacked up.
Posted by: Cory at February 26, 2005 05:20 PMOrff's "Carmina Burana".
Posted by: Mark at February 26, 2005 06:47 PMGood choices by all, but I really like a cut off William Shatner's album The Transform of Command called "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins......"Bilbo, Bilbo, Bilbo Baggins only three feet tall....Bilbo, Bilbo, Bilbo Baggins greatest little hobbit of them ALL!!!!!" I really think it would frighten the greatest batsmen in all of Middle Earth.
Posted by: Joe and Kevin at February 26, 2005 11:47 PM"Ballad of Bilbo Baggins"? Was that a Shatner piece? I know out on the 'net (if you look hard enough) you can find a film clip of Leonard Nimoy (and a number of very nice looking women) singing that one.
As long as I've been tempted to pollute the comments in this thread, my choice for a closer song would be either Warren Zevon's "Lawyers, Guns and Money" or the Animals' "We've Got To Get Out Of This Place".
Posted by: Len Cleavelin at February 27, 2005 09:31 AMHolst's Mars, The Bringer of War, from the Planets is the obvious choice here.
Posted by: Jon at February 27, 2005 10:29 AMSince Orff is already taken I'd have to go with Boston's "Long Time" intro.

Closing Time by Supersonic
You have to pick a song that's overplayed and overpayed, like most closers.
How about, "Boom Boom, Out Go the Lights"; Pat Travers, I think...
Posted by: at March 1, 2005 09:55 AMAmen to "The Final Countdown." That still, in my book, is one of the best songs ever -- great for a ringtone for your cellular phone, too.
