Milestones at Miller
« How Do They Stay Up? | Main | Shortstops »I had a great time this past weekend at Miller Park. Saw some good friends, family and baseball. Saw the roof open and closed. Saw the Cards sweep the Brewers.
Does it get better than that?
I even got snuck into "Club Level" by my friend Russell Badgett, an honest to goodness Brewers fan. Rusty showed me a great picture he STILL had on his cell phone of a home-made banner at Miller last year marking the 100th win by our accomplished Cards club.
Also, no one's mentioned it yet, but Sunday marked our beloved TLR's 800th win as a Cardinal.
Tony, odi et amo your moves... but thanks.
Let's see what else we can get done this year at Miller Park.
As an aside, I was surprised by the following trivia at MP on Sunday:
What Brewer holds the single-season record for hits:
a) Jeff Cirillo
b) Cecil Cooper
c) Robin Yount
First of all, I was surprised no Paul Molitor. Secondly, I was surprised at the correct answer.
Thirdly (I'm really uncomfortable writing "thirdly"), I was surprised that about 30-40% of the fans were clearly Cards fans. My brother-in-law Jeff told me that for Cubs games, it's about 75% Cubbie fans. Maybe the Cards and Cubs could schedule a road series there, a sort of Trading Spaces for baseball freaks who are just looking for an excuse to drive. Hmmmm, but let's not get started on the scheduling between the Cubs and Cards.
Posted by Ryan at April 19, 2005 12:07 PMI was behind the Cards's dugout for both Saturday and Sunday and the percentage estimate is a little high, but very close. My friend and I compared Saturday's seating arrangment to an English soccer match, with Cards fans from home down the third base side and brewers fans across the way. All we were missing were the cops between us to stop the melees and the flares on the field.
Brewers fans are good fans, hungry for anything to cheer about. Besides, ANY state that has grilling meats and drinking beer in a parking lot as hobby is ok with me.
Without looking it up, I'm going to go with Cecil Cooper---I remember some pretty ridiculous years he had with the Brewers.
Posted by: salvo at April 19, 2005 03:13 PMI watched every game on TV this weekend and it was awesome to see all the Cardinal fans there. When Rolen hit his homerun on Sunday's game, it sounded like it was a home game from all the people cheering. One question: were the Cardinals fans up there mostly from STL or were from scattered areas around the midwest?
Posted by: dcoy at April 19, 2005 04:05 PMWell, there's no way to tell that I guess. But, in our group, the Card's fans were from Chicago and the Twin Cities. I suspect the majority were from Milwaukee or Chicago.
I asked the group I was with if 1/3 of the fans were Cards fans. They all said "at least", plus there's the cards fans not wearing red, so 40% seemed worth saying. And like dcoy said, by Sunday's game, when the Cards tied it then pulled ahead, it seemed more like half and half.
CC is right. If I remember he got 219. Molitor got 216 one year.
I got some rude comments with my Cardinal red, but my girlfriend got faaaaaar more from wearing her maroon Minnesota sweatshirt. Overall the fans were great though.
