Game Chatter -- 4/23/05 Clemens v. Mulder
« Chatter, Astros (8-7) at Birds (9-5), 4-22-05 | Main | Mulder Watch »I wanted to go to this game, but it's 43 degrees at Busch. Mulder has had two uneventful innings, but Pujols and Molina gave up on a foul pop way, way too soon. The defense continues to struggle.
Roger Cedeño came into the game 435/552/565 in 23 at-bats against Clemens. Nobody hid La Russa's cheat sheets, so Cedeño gets the start today. Yuck.
Posted by Rob at April 23, 2005 01:49 PMHas Clemens been bleaching his hair?
Posted by: Rob at April 23, 2005 01:52 PM43 degrees? That's awesome.
is something wrong with reggie sanders? I havn't seen him in the lineup for a while
Posted by: josh at April 23, 2005 01:52 PMThe cards have 4 regulars hitting under 250:
Walker .213
Rolen .233
Grudz .220
Molina .149
Yet they're 10-5, 2.5 games up. Incredible.
Posted by: josh at April 23, 2005 01:56 PMAdded a remark about Cedeño. I missed the first, but Cedeño was nice enough to fly out with the bases loaded.
Posted by: Rob at April 23, 2005 01:59 PMThe Astros announcers just mentioned that the Cardinals had put Eckstein on an arm-strengthening program that they use for pitchers. Hadn't heard that.
Posted by: Rob at April 23, 2005 02:01 PMhaha, thats got to be embarrassing.
Posted by: josh at April 23, 2005 02:06 PMWell, maybe TLR will recognize how silly those note cards are. The Cardinals don't have anything on the scoreboard to show for it, but they're working Clemens pretty good, 71 pitches through 3.
Posted by: Rob at April 23, 2005 02:15 PMIt's a little embarrassing for Eck, but I think it's had an effect. His throws do look a little better than I remembered from 2002. Maybe I mis-remembered.
Posted by: Rob at April 23, 2005 02:17 PMWow, Mulder made Lane look silly.
Posted by: Rob at April 23, 2005 02:25 PMWay to work Clemens, Yadier.
Posted by: Rob at April 23, 2005 02:31 PMThis is the Good Mark Mulder.
Posted by: Rob at April 23, 2005 02:52 PMNice play by Lane to keep Cedeño from scoring.
Posted by: Rob at April 23, 2005 03:00 PM126 piches for Clemens through 7, but the Birds have failed to score and have stranded 5 runners in scoring position.
Helluva effort by Mulder: 70 pitches through 7, 3 baserunners (1 on an error)---unbelievable!
Posted by: salvo at April 23, 2005 03:14 PMAusmus flies out to Edmonds. A little easier play for Edmonds this time.
Posted by: Rob at April 23, 2005 03:17 PMI'm an A's fan and was very disappointed to see Mulder traded... but still interested in what he does for the Cards. You guys have a gem of a pitcher. This guy would throw a complete game using less than 100 pitches - and today he looks the same. Great pitcher...
Posted by: Terry McFall at April 23, 2005 03:29 PMYeah, Mulder's been dominant today. Maybe the hardest hit ball was a groundball to the pitcher.
Posted by: Rob at April 23, 2005 03:34 PMCedeño didn't look that interested in hitting the ball after fouling one off his foot.
Posted by: Rob at April 23, 2005 03:38 PMDoes Tony La Russa really think Abraham Nuñez is a better hitter than Mabry or Sanders?
Posted by: Rob at April 23, 2005 03:41 PMWow. What an effort by Mulder---10 innings, 4 hits, no walks, and just 101 pitches. One of the best-pitched games we'll see all year---let's get the bats to give him a win here in the bottom of the 10th.
And I take back the thousand or so negative words I've written about Mulder since around December 17th, or whenever the trade was.
Posted by: salvo at April 23, 2005 03:51 PMWell, the results are obvious proof of Sanders's superiority as a hitter.
Walker versus Lidge. Magic 8-ball says strikeout.
Posted by: Rob at April 23, 2005 03:55 PMSon of a female-dog.
Posted by: Rob at April 23, 2005 03:59 PMIt's hard not to like a 10 inning complete game shut out from a pitcher who pundits had largely written off.
Posted by: ryan vb at April 23, 2005 04:24 PMLast two starts by Mulder:
18 ip, 6 hits, ZERO earned runs. And 196 pitches---98 per 9 ip.
Pretty good.
