Sluggers
« The Genius | Main | Your 1991 Cardinals Part 2: Todd Zeile »Studes at "The Hardball Times" has an article on Michael Schell's book on the all-time great sluggers. What got my attention:
At his current rate, Albert Pujols will be the eighth-greatest batter of all time.Just behind Willie Mays and Lou Gehrig, and just ahead of Stan Musial and Ty Cobb.
Pujols just turned 25, so the comparison's premature, but we may be building towards a massive controversy: Musial or Pujols? I foresee angry discussions over the matter at many Thanksgiving dinners.
Posted by Rob at May 5, 2005 12:28 PMMUSIAL!!!!
Posted by: TOLAXOR at May 5, 2005 02:07 PMI know the point will be forever lost to many, but I don't think it's a fair comparison, the straight up which one is the greatest Cardinal of all time.
It's really more about the right man at the right time.
Besides, everyone knows the Wizard is the greatest Cardinal ever.
Posted by: RyanVB at May 5, 2005 02:39 PMAt 20, I don't remember Ozzie Smith's great years, and far less the incomparable Stan Musial. This reverence for the Cardinals' past is certainly commendable, and it is after all a glorious past, but in my lifetime I doubt that we will ever see a St. Louis Cardinal like Albert Pujols. He will probably be the rubric by which all other Cardinals of the 21st century will be judged.
I truly feel blessed to be able to sit back and watch a hitter this brilliant play for the birds on bat. With respect to the great Musial, it's Albert Pujols to me.
Posted by: Eric at May 5, 2005 04:29 PMSorry RyanVB, but Bob Gibson's our greatest Redbird ever.
Posted by: at May 5, 2005 04:59 PMNo love for So Taguchi?
Posted by: MO Boiler at May 6, 2005 11:28 AMI tend to agree with Ryan in that you can't really compare the two. They're both men amongst men in more ways than one.
However, if I had to chose an all-time greatest Cardinal, it would have to be Musial. He had 20 (20!) All-Star appearances and 3 MVP's (2nd all time in MVP Shares)
Gibson is clearly the greatest Redbird pitcher of all time. Gibby's post-season record? 9GS, 7-2 W/L, 81IP, 17BB, 92K, 1.89ERA. That's all in the World Series, against some of the toughest lineups in the game at the time.
Posted by: John at May 6, 2005 11:52 AMi vote for gibby as well. for his career-long excellence, his postseason dominance, his incredible pride and determination and class. special player, special person.
pujols is proud and determined too. he could be gibson's equal; we'll know in 15 yrs or so.
Posted by: l boros at May 6, 2005 12:42 PMI always like to point out the Gibson is one of the few players in professional sports who caused the shape of the field to be changed to give everyone else a chance. Can't say that for The Man or Mr. Pujols, who really needs a better moniker than Phat or Prince Albert. And Pu won't do, even if he is the s___.
Posted by: Bill at May 6, 2005 12:54 PMJohn, look again, Musial played in 24 All Star Games.
I boros, I agree with your characterization of Gibby but which of those superlatives are you saying doesn't apply to Stosh?
Bill, Nice point about changing the field. I guess you could put George Mikan in that category as well.
For any infidels not voting the #6 ticket...
Stan Musial kicks ass on the harmonica and met John Paul II. No other Cardinal can match that (or what he did in 1948.)
Best players born on November 21 in Donora, PA:
#1 - Stan Musial
#2 - Ken Griffey, Jr.
Musial was named one of the #100 CowBoys of the 20th Century by the CowBoy Heritage Club for "demonstrating a Buckaroo Attitude" and "inspiring others to do the same."
Was told "They tell me you're too old to play ball and I'm too young to be President," By JFK in 1960. Two years later The Man saw Kennedy again and said "We fooled 'em!"
Funds the Stan Musial Scholarship given by the National Polish Sports Hall of Fame to deserving Polish-American high schoolers each year.
Performed on Hee Haw.
You read that last line right, jerky. Can you top it? Didn't think so.
Stan Musial is by far the greatest Cardinal of all time and if you don't agree you need help. Thank you.
