Open Thread: Steroids

« Four Months In -- Who's Hot & Who's Not? | Main | Cards Prospect Watch »

The Orioles' Rafael Palmeiro was suspended this week for steroid use, less than a month after collecting his 3,000th hit in Seattle. For Palmeiro, it potentially cripples his Hall of Fame chances, but for the game of baseball, it creates a cloud of suspicion over nearly everyone. If Palmeiro, who adamantly denied using steroids before Congress (...Congress!), and isn't exactly Mr. Physical Specimen, is on them... then who isn't?

Well, other than this guy.

I doubt he was 'on steroids'. I really don't like the steroid testing, and wish it were more open.

I sincerely, completely, totally doubt that Palmeiro was a Canseco or Bonds, and I'm quite frankly disgusted with the MEDIA over the whole situation, complete with the vilification of Palmeiro over the incident. I don't know the details, the media sure as hell doesn't know the details, but that doesn't keep 75% of sports writers from expressing adamant outrage at the 'crime' Palmeiro has committed against the sport.

Until I know more, I withhold judgment. Unfortunately, I stand in the minority.

I took that same position; I was really disappointed and held out hope that it was something that was present in OTC stuff. Then... I saw a report this morning that said it was "WINSTROL". That's heavy stuff. Game over.

An anonymous leak - and in this day of steroid testing, I have to extremely disbelieve that anyone would be STUPID enough to take something that's been tested for for over 15 years.

Eh - the witchhunt is on, and since we can't get Bonds, we'll go after everyone else we can.

Sorry about multi-posting - I have to say, this issue quite frankly disgusts me, and if it weren't for the Cardinals, I wouldn't be watching baseball anymore.

Side effect of Viagra, perhaps?

No, I'm not joking.

Remember how Will Clark blasted Palmeiro for taking "his job" in Texas? Paybacks are heck.

OK, that time I was joking.

I am of the opinion that even if Palmeiro was on the juice (which, based on those reports, suggest he was), his "unintentional" experiences are no different than that of Bonds, McGwire, Giambi, Sosa, etc. -- except that MLB got him to take a test. Remember Bonds' sample that was destroyed over the winter, as ordered by some judge? I don't remember the details, but that had to have been a smoking gun. I know it's innocent until proven guilty in this country, but please... when you have to go to court to protect a measley urine sample from being tested, it's hard not to know something's up.
