« Reyes to Start Against Milwaukee? | Main | Parallel Universe »

Well, that was a promising start by Anthony Reyes, wasn't it? He may have benefited from a high strike zone from Angel Hernandez, or maybe Angel Hernandez just decided to be a jerk to the Brewers, and it looks like we can expect a few scary flyballs each start from Reyes. You also probably don't want John Rodriguez and especially Hector Luna in the outfield behind Reyes.

Today is the 10th anniversary of this odd affair. Apparently that is the most recent forfeit in Major League Baseball. That's not quite as exciting as a fan falling to the screen behind home plate, but it does mess up my databases.

Why was the game forfeited? From the boxscore you linked to, it looks like a typical 9 inning game.

I always thought the official score of a forfeit was 9-0. I see I need to do some digging in the rulebook again.

Balls thrown on field during ball night at Dodgers Stadium, IIRC.

Yes, it was "Ball Day" at Dodger Stadium. Note that Cardinals pitchers only went 8.1 innings in the boxscore.

I went googling for a description earlier and couldn't find much useful. Pretty neat link, Holden:

'First-base umpire Bob Davidson said, "Lasorda instigated the whole damn thing by waving his fat little arms out there. We gave them three chances. Strike three and you're out."'

Even though the disco record burning riot in Chicago is my ultimate favorite, that was a classic as well. I can't believe there were Dodger fans there past the 7th, must have been before they sold lattes at Dodger Stadium.

"Even though the disco record burning riot in Chicago is my ultimate favorite..."

Alas, I missed Disco Demolition Night by about a month and a half (it happened in July, '79, IIRC, and I moved to Chicago for some schooling in August of that year.

If you gotta forfeit a game, that's the best reason I can think of to do it.
