Interesting Speculation...

« Frustrating | Main | Embarrassing »

It's probably not economically feasible, but it's an interesting thought. From a John Brattain musing on the trials of being "A-Dog" in today's Hardball Times:

So what can Alex Rodriguez do? Well he has to remember that his image can’t get any worse. He’s going to have to let his game speak for itself. He’ll never satisfy all his critics but he can avoid adding more. He might consider simply not speaking to the media a la Steve Carlton and Albert Belle, since everything he says will be viewed with suspicion or scorn—just let his bat do the talking. If the Yankees brass decides he’s expendable, he should try to get out of the American League; his non-baseball reputation is slag [in many parts] of Seattle, Texas, Boston and New York. We’ve seen players like Roger Maris, Mark McGwire, and Jim Edmonds thrive in St. Louis—maybe A-Rod could find peace there.

If the Yankees have decided that he's not clutch enough for him, then the Cardinals would be happy to move Eckstein to 2nd and start A-Rod at short, giving them a fearsome infield. Of coruse, the Yankees would have to pay $15 to $20 million a year of his remaining contract, and be prepared to accept nothing more than Chris Duncan in return...

They can have Julian Tavarez too.

Yeah, I think I just might take A-Rod, if absolutely necessary.

When is his contract up?

Off the top of my head, A-Rod has played 5 years of his 10 year contract.

Go ahead. Buy him.

The new Busch will be known as "The House That A-Rod Kept Out Of Postseason Play" when the Cardinals end up trading all their good young blood to Steinbrenner's evil crew for him.

Yeah, a team with Pujols, Rolen, A-Rod, Carpenter and Mulder obviously will be kept out of the post-season.

Laurence, don't let your jealousy get in the way here.

"when the Cardinals trade all their good young blood"

Are you kidding? Who would be untouhcable if the chance to get A-Rod came up. I say nobody. Hey, the farm system isn't winning any awards.

I think if the Yanks would agree to eat a healthy portion of A-Rod's contract the Cards would trade ANY of their prospects for him, including some kind of package deal. Quite simply, A-Rod's another Pujols, with better speed and defense.

There's no way this would ever happen but I bet any A-Rod deal invovling the Cards would have Jim Edmonds going the other way. The Yanks need a CF and taking Jed's $12,000,000 off the books would make swallowing what part of ARod's contract the Yanks won't eat all the easier.

No way this ever happens, though. A-Rod's not going anywhere. He's one of the 4-5 best players in the game - right there with Estaban Yan. Plus, I'd hate to see Jimmy finish his career anywhere else. I love that drama king.
