Embarrassing
« Interesting Speculation... | Main | Do Something »I'm going to confess to a character flaw. In spite of the fact that I understand the relevant numbers, I thought the series was over after yesterday's game. It's silly and I know it and I don't want to present it as a good thing. It's probably just a defense mechanism, an attempt to put psychological distance between me and the team I follow too closely.
So I know I have a problem, but before I can move up the next step of recovery, I get today's effort against Brandon F. Backe. It's the bottom of the third and Backe's faced the minimum. Gosh, this feels a lot like the 2004 World Series... or the 1996 LCS.
Posted by Rob at October 16, 2005 04:35 PMI've had it, another year STL can't go the distance. Why they have let the Astro's in 2 years in a row is beyond me. No hitting at all, a bunch over paid can't make through the playoffs players. I've been watching them for 35 years, no more for me. I've wasted too much time and money on a team that can't finish it when it really counts. I'm done with baseball. I might as well be a cub fan. At least they know they're never going to win. Anybody want some high priced jerseys and hats?
Posted by: Mike at October 16, 2005 06:26 PMIt's tough to watch. I would agree that after the Cards lost in game two that it appeared to be over. The Cards look listless in the field and when LaRussa got ejected tonight you hoped it would ignite a spark, wake the team up, make them realize that they've been sleepwalking through the last few games, but instead Edmonds had to get booted too.
On another note, Rob, I think you wondered earlier this past month why there is this huge wasteland between Great American Ballpark and Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati. Well I live in Cincy and I can tell you one reason is because the City Government here can't tell their ass from a hole in the ground, but also because it's they have plans for it - they just can't figure out how to get it funded. See http://msnbc.msn.com/id/9648743/ for more info. I suspect that the new Busch is going to experience some of the same growing pains over the next decade.

Posted by: Daniel at October 16, 2005 07:42 PMEmbarrassing is right.
It really does remind me of the 2004 WS. The Astros are playing perfectly against us, turning this into exactly the kind of series they need it to be to have a shot to win. We are doing everything in our power to not give ourselves a chance to win.
I will say this, though, it's not over yet. And, although it's obvious we have to win out to get to the WS, if we win the final game in Houston, it returns us to home field advantage and puts us on pace to win a tight 7 game series, just as if we had won the first game at MMpark or tonight's game.
But there's no way we can do it without some life and fire in our eyes. I cannot believe how flat so many of the guys on our team look. That's the embarrasing part. We look like the damn yankees.
Posted by: Ryan at October 16, 2005 08:23 PMI'm still more embarrassed by my response than by the Cardinals' effort. But that's subject to change.
Sean, I'm not looking forward to the mess next to Busch.
