One Down, 94 + 11 To Go
« The 2006 Bullpen and Bench | Main | Adventures of Baron von Isringhausen »A dozen silly thoughts organized in Harper's List fashion:
275 / 316 / 377 - Updated 2006 ZiPS for Miles, naively replacing average 5 of 507 at-bats with Monday's results
9 - Number of consecutive outs Aaron Miles would have to make for his OBP to fall under .300
22 - Number of scoreless outs Chris Carpenter needs to get his ERA below 3.00
86 - Carpenter's unofficial pitch count after 5 innings, not that letting him start the 6th was a war crime or anything
327 - Days between Scott Rolen home runs
1,029 - Days between Scott Rolen grand slams
1 - Games between the opener and Albert Pujols's last homer
2 - Multi-homer games for Albert Pujols in 2005
17 - Multi-walk games for Albert Pujols in 2005
1 - Number of Cardinals with at-bats who didn't get a hit on Monday (Scott Spiezio)
11.8 - Average number of combined runs scored on Cardinals opening days during the LaRussa Era
3 - Base occupied by a jackass umpire (as I understand it, that means Cuzzi won't call balls and strikes this series)
It blows me away that Albert Pujols only had 2 multi-HR games in 2005. That just goes to show how consistent he is in hitting them that he has to spread them out like that. Streaky is not a word you hear in reference to Albert the Great. But he always looks for one key statistic to improve upon each year, so perhaps this is his year to hit 50 HR's with 4 multi-HR games?
Posted by: dlr at April 4, 2006 02:25 AMI was a little surprised Carp came out for the 6th: 86 pitches, not exactly on his "A" game (seven hits allowed through 5), team is up 10-2, it's cold, windy, wet and raw, and with a day off Tuesday, it might be nice for the pen to see some game action.
I had the game on MLBtv, my co-worker had the Red Sox-Rangers, and we were giving each other updates---I said before the 6th that I thought that, given the weather, the score, and Carp's pitch count/performance, he was probably done for the day.
A home run and a walk (totaling eleven more pitches) later, he was done for the day....

Watch out for that hot water. Wapner's coming on, gotta go.
Posted by: Rob at April 4, 2006 05:45 PMObservations through Game 4 of 2006:
-Juan Encarnacion is either easily distracted or disinterested. His AB's and defense are the stuff of nightmares -- lots of LOB and some scary moments in RF. So far, I'd take Chris Duncan over this guy any day. Why is TLR still batting Encarnacion 2nd?
-Aaron Miles just might have game. And why isn't he batting 2nd instead of Encarnacion? At least he's making good contact and can run.
-Chris Speizio is not 2006 iteration of John Mabry. He's not even the 2006 iteration of Moms Mabley.
-Jim Edmonds is still the guy you want at the plate if you're the opposing pitcher and you need a K to end the game.
-David Eckstein has more K's through 4 games than he had in the first month of 2005.
-So Taguchi seems to be playing without much confidence. His AB's have been very weak.
-The Cardinal bullpen is the real deal. It will have to be to make up for the lack of production at the very top of the batting order.
